Start with how the floor will be used
Forklift routes, racking, production equipment, floor coatings, and drainage can all affect the requirements the designer sets for the slab. Provide the available operating layout with the concrete drawings. If equipment or racking is still being selected, identify those open decisions so the team can assess their effect before construction.
The scope should distinguish the slab from the work below and above it. Base preparation, under-slab utilities, vapor retarders, reinforcement, joint filling, surface treatments, and final coatings may be split between contracts. Recording those boundaries helps an owner or general contractor compare proposals and arrange the right sequence.
Agree on joints and finish requirements
Joint locations deserve attention alongside column lines, doorways, equipment bases, and traffic routes. The NRMCA explains that joints help manage where cracking occurs; they do not make concrete crack-free. Joint details and cutting requirements should follow the project documents and be coordinated before placement.
A finish description should explain the required surface and how it will be assessed. Where the specifications call for floor tolerances, testing, hardeners, sealers, or a coating-ready surface, include those requirements in the bid information. Compatibility between curing products and later flooring treatments also needs confirmation with the relevant suppliers and project team.
Allow for protection and follow-on work
Plan truck access, placement areas, curing, and protection together with the general construction schedule. Adjacent trades need to know where they can travel and store materials, and when the floor can be released for their work. Curing supports the development of concrete properties; the method and duration should follow the specifications rather than an assumed universal reopening date.
